Why You Absolutely Need to Take a Road Trip in Greece

Going to Greece means island hopping through the Cyclades or visiting crowded sites such as Athens, Santorini, or Mykonos. While there is no doubt about the incredible beauty of these destinations, they remain very touristy. To get out of the routine and the déjà vu, a week on the Greek roads could make you discover the depths of Greece, its history, and ts characters. We explain why a road trip in Greece, especially in the South, is what you need right now.

Because you like it

If you are a fan of road trips and the roads of Los Angeles and Thailand no longer hold any secrets for you, Greece is the ideal country to see something different and marvel again. Being “on the road” means returning to your nomadic origins to move regularly and at your own pace. But also, see landscapes, take breathtaking roads, and marvel at their beauty while moving from one point to another.

Because it looks like the South

You don’t deserve just any road trip, but THE road trip in southern Greece. In the southern part of mainland Greece, heading south to Laconia, lies the best part of this Hellenic country. Many locals will tell you that the south is the best of everything Greek (that’s saying something!) and that its cultural riches and spectacular landscape will amaze you.

Because you have itchy feet

We won’t hide it from you: having a car on-site offers unparalleled freedom of movement when traveling abroad. And then, staying to relax on the most beautiful beaches in Greece is certainly relaxing, but don’t you want to see a bit of the country? So, if you want to visit different cities and regions of Greece in a short time and at your leisure, the car is the ideal means of transport. Especially if you plan to stay less than two nights in the same place and the cities you want to visit are relatively far from each other and sometimes quite remote.

Because you love agritourism

Agricultural tourism allows you to discover the agricultural know-how of a territory andby extension the landscapes, social practices, and culinary specialties of a particular country or region. In the southeast of the Peloponnese peninsula, at the Eumelia guesthouse, you can help harvest Kalamata olives, while enjoying the beauty of the landscapes. This 148-acre farm has had around 1,000 century-old olive trees since the 1890s. You will learn to use the method developed by the ancient Greeks: by hand or with a rake and let them fall like plump raindrops into a net.

Because you love history

If you drive south of the picturesque Mani Peninsula, you will enter the area that is the beautiful town of Gytheio. A charming port town with a history rooted in ancient Greece. You will fall in awe at the beautiful houses of Gytheio, also full of stories. They were thee source of clan wars and vendettas in the 17th century until the end of the Greek Revolution in 1832. In Laconia, you will stop at the ancient city of Mystras, a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At the foot of the Taygetos Mountains, you will walk up its empty streets, and admire its medieval houses, churches, and an impressive number of beautiful frescoes.
