Organized travel for a single person a good idea

I’ve been talking about solo travel for years, because I love traveling alone myself. But I was recently asked a question that I thought deserved an article: is it a good idea to join a solo travel group? The answer is “it depends.” Here are the pros and cons, as well as some alternatives to traveling in a group when you’re alone!

Why choose a group trip for a single person?

You don’t have to worry about logistics.

When you travel alone, you don’t have to worry about planning all the logistical details, such as booking accommodations, transportation, guided tours, and more. An organized tour, meaning the agency you select, takes care of these aspects for you, allowing you to relax and fully enjoy your trip. Researching and planning a trip can take a lot of time and effort, especially if you’re new to travel. A package tour saves you time because itineraries are pre-planned and activities are organized, saving you the hassle of organizing everything yourself.

You don’t have to fear loneliness in everyday life

Organized trips for singles often bring together like-minded individuals who are also traveling solo. This provides a great opportunity to meet new people, build friendships, and share travel experiences.

You will feel safer while traveling.g

Traveling alone can sometimes raise safety concerns. With an organized tour, you’ll have peace of mind, as there’s usually a guide or tour leader who ensures the group’s safety and is there to support you if needed.

You will have a resource with you at all times

Package tours often offer experienced local guides who can show you the best sights, provide cultural and historical information, and give you deeper insight into your destination.

You are leaving for a particular destination.ion

Let me explain, I’m not a fan of group travel on a day-to-day basis. It’s simply not my thing for the reasons I’ll explain in the next section. However, for certain destinations, I find it appropriate. For example, organizing my overnight stay in the Moroccan desert with transfers from Fez to Marrakech before and after was complicated online. So I decided to book this portion as a tailor-made trip (I also explain this below), and I have absolutely no regrets. If you want to discover this trip, read this article . Of course, traveling solo can also be a rewarding and challenging experience, but choosing an organized tour can be a great option if you want to enjoy some practical benefits, meet other travelers, and have a more guided and safe experience. It will depend on your personal preferences and what you’re looking for in your trip.

What would make a solo package tour not for you?

A solo organized trip may not be suitable for some people due to the following reasons. Is this you?

Do you prefer independent or self-drive travel?

Some travelers enjoy the freedom of choosing their itinerary, discovering places “off the beaten track” (you know how much I hate that expression), and having unique experiences.

In a package tour, itineraries are often designed to suit a group and may not include all the destinations or specific activities you want to explore individually.

You don’t like being in groups or like your privacy

Solo travel often involves sharing common areas, such as accommodations, meals, and transportation, with other travelers. If you prefer your own space and privacy, you may find this constant proximity to other people distracting.

You want to get away from the classics

Package tours typically have a pre-planned itinerary with set times for activities and visits. If you prefer to have more flexibility to explore at your own pace, change your plans at the last minute, or make spontaneous decisions, a package tour may limit your freedom of choice. It’s the same if you want to go to places less suitable for hosting a group (e.g, no reservations, not enough rooms, no space for a minibus, etc.).

Your budget doesn’t allow it

Package tours can be more expensive than traveling alone, as they often include the services of a guide, planned activities, meals, and accommodations. If you’re traveling on a budget, you might prefer to save money by organizing your trip yourself.

You’re scared, but you want to challenge yourself

Traveling solo can be an opportunity to step out of your comfort zone, make independent decisions, and take on personal challenges. If you’re looking for that experience of personal growth and independence, a solo package tour might not meet those expectations. Everyone has their travel preferences and needs, and what works for one person may not be suitable for another. It’s important to consider these factors and choose the travel style that best suits your expectations and personality.

Is an organized trip for a single senior different?

The person who asked me the question described herself as a senior citizen. She was asking me if group travel for singles was recommended for seniors, as she was worried she wouldn’t be able to keep up. I say, GO! Well, I’m not that old yet, so I can’t speak personally about this topic. However, there are so many different package tours out there that I’m sure everyone will find something they like. Many agencies are accustomed to the physical constraints and limitations, special medication needs, and cruising speeds of aging people. So, simply book a self-guided tour that’s tailored to your abilities. Having traveled with people older than me, I can say that it’s often the retirees who overtake me on the slopes! You shouldn’t always rely on age, either!

What are the alternatives to organized travel if you are traveling alone?

If you’re traveling alone and prefer to avoid organized tours, there are plenty of structured and less intimidating alternatives for discovering new places and having unique experiences. Here are some suggestions:

Tailor-made trip

Here’s a formula I love, halfway between independent travel and organized travel for a single person: tailor-made travel. I mentioned my trip to Morocco above. Some agencies, like Allo Destinations, with whom I work regularly, organize your trips or portions of your trip. It’s all the convenience of organized travel but with complete freedom! No headaches, but all the benefits of private travel are still there!

Couchsurfer or sleeping at a local’s house

This is an online platform that connects travelers with local hosts who offer free accommodation. It’s a great way to meet locals and explore a destination from a more authentic perspective. So, you’re on your own for sightseeing, but you have a local resource and someone to stay with.

Home exchanges

If you’re comfortable letting strangers stay in your home, you might consider doing a home exchange with other travelers. This allows you to benefit from free accommodation in a destination of your choice while also offering your exchange partner the opportunity to stay in your home.
